Lassithi – Aghios Nikolaos – Sitia

LASSITHI

Lassithi Plateau, with its 10,000 windmills leisurely churning the air, lies off the main road to Malia. The road zigzags up the mountain until suddenly the whole plain spreads out below, fertile and cultivated.

AGHIOS NIKOLAOS

From Malia, a smooth and easy drive will take you to Crete’s tourist showplace – the lovely Gulf of Mirabello. The two great concentrations of hotels and bungalow resorts are at Elounda and Aghios Nikolaos with its cluster of white houses linked with the colorful fishing port by narrow streets.

SITIA

Sitia stands at the other end of the gulf. It is a pleasant town and port dominated by its Venetian fort. Life centers around the waterfront and you can have a good meal at one of the local tavernas before setting out for Kato Zakro, the smallest and most recently excavated Minoan Palace.
Vai on the easternmost tip of Crete is Europe’s only palm tree forest. Some 5,000 palm trees are sloping down to a lake like a blue sea.
