The Prefecture of Chalkidiki is just below Macedonia. To the north, it borders on the Prefecture of Thessaloniki, while to the east it is washed by the Strymonic Gulf, to the west by the Thermaic Gulf, and to the south by the Aegean sea. The most notable geographical feature of Chalkidiki is, its three ‘legs’: the peninsulas of Cassandra, Sithonia, and Athos.

History of Chalkidiki
Chalkidiki was first inhabited in prehistoric times, by Thracians. In the 8th century it was colonized by Chalkis, in Euboea, from which it took its name, and by Eretria, also in Euboea. Later colonizing cities, included Corinth and Andros. In the Persian Wars, the cities of Chalkidiki were compelled to recognize Persian sovereignty. Later they joined the Athenian Confederacy and, during the Peloponnesian War, founded the Koinon (Community) of Chalkis. After this happened, Chalkidiki came under the sway of Philip of Macedon. In Byzantine and post-Byzantine times Chalkidiki was badly affected by the raids of pirates, but under Turkish rule, many of its villages enjoyed special privileges because of the importance of their metal mines. Despite this preferential treatment, Chalkidiki rose in revolt against the Turks in 1821, along with the rest of Greece, under the leadership of Emmanouil Papas from Serres. The area was not united with Greece until 1912.
Something About The Region Of Chalkidiki
There are frequent departures from Thessaloniki for Chalkidiki. Those arriving by yacht will find facilities at the Porto Karras marina in Sithonia. From Chalkidiki, the obvious excursion is to Thessaloniki, while men may also visit Mount Athos, which can be reached by caique from Lerissos or Ouranoupolis. A Few Ways To Get To Chalkidiki
Chalkidiki, with its capital Polygyros, was once part of Macedonia, just a few dozen kilometers away from Thessaloniki, the second-largest city of Greece. Chalkidiki consists of the mainland and three peninsulas, they are from west to east: Kassandra, Sithonia, and Mount Athos. Kassandra is the most populated and combines the pine trees forests, the deep blue sea with the cosmopolitan charm.
The villages are spread on both sides of the mountains to the coasts. Sithonia is the middle peninsula and less populated. The area is famous for its impressive natural scenery.
