In front of the Palau Nacional and at the top of Maria Cristina avenue we find the illuminated fountain, la Font Magica. A masterpiece of engineering applied to every possible combination of water and light. The work of Carlos Buigas, the central basin is 1.8m deep, oval in shape, 65m long, and 50m wide.
It contains two smaller basins the lower one 35. diameter and the upper 12m. The rate of flow is 2,430 liters per second and the central jet can reach a height of 50 meters.
There are twenty-nine different combinations of water which, together with the different lighting effects gives an almost infinite range of variations. The water is illuminated by 4,730 lamps with ten-color filters. The fountain is directed by remote control from a cabin overlooking it.
At night one of the most beautiful sights is the magical aspect offered by Passeig de Maria Cristina, marked by small fountains in different shapes and colors, framing, in the end, the Font Magica, situated against the impressive background of the Palau Nacional.
